History
The history of Sitia originates in the prehistoric times as the palace of Zakros, dates in 1900 B.C in its early face.
The city of Sitia, is likely to be identified with the the classical and hellenistic territory of Itia or Sitea,
homeland to the famous Myson, one of the 7 Wise men of antiquity and also the birthplace of Vintsezos Kornaros,
the poet of Erotokritos, one of the most famous poems in the Middle Ages.
What seems to be certain is that the Byzantin
city is found directly under the modern Sitia. The city has endured many misfortunes, from the earthquake in 1508,
to the invasion of the tremendous Hairedin Barbarosa in 1538 and to the destruction of the Venetians back in 1651.
The city was rebuild in 1870.
